Harvest Moon Festival History
SINCE 1962
The Harvest Moon Festival began in 1962, when Lillian Reed stood beside the Parkersburg City Park pavilion with three baskets of dried flowers and a dream to celebrate the beauty of fall and the spirit of handmade craftsmanship. That day, the seeds of something beautiful were planted.
Inspired by her vision, Marie Weekley and Jackie Haycook continued Lillian’s floral artistry, while Bill Reed, a woodcarver and Marie’s father, along with Bill Roberts, a tinsmith, together helped grow the festival by inviting more local artisans to share their work.
What began as a modest gathering slowly transformed into a cherished tradition. Tents sprouted like mushrooms in the grass. The scent of woodsmoke and kettle corn filled the air. And every year, more people came—drawn by the charm of handmade goods, the laughter of children, and the sense of community that pulsed through the park like a heartbeat.
Eventually, Wood County Recreation stepped in to help carry the torch, ensuring the festival could grow without losing its roots. This became a gateway of opportunity for the youth of the Mid-Ohio Valley. From fall-themed programs to performance showcases and hands-on workshops, the festival began planting seeds of inspiration in a new generation.
Now, decades later, the Harvest Moon Festival has evolved. Today you’ll find lively children’s activities, local bands, and interactive entertainment, nestled alongside booths still brimming with handcrafted woodwork, pottery, floral art, and creations preserving the artistry and history of Lillian Reed’s original vision.
