Recreation
The Wood County Recreation Commission was developed on September 27, 1945 by members of the Wood County Commission, City of Parkersburg, City of Vienna and the Wood County Board of Education.
Wood County Recreation Events
Below are some of the programs that have just been completed, or are coming up in the near future
Small Fry Basketball
Starting mid-January. Official start date and location to be determined. Occurs on Saturday mornings/afternoons depending on age group. Divided into age groups 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Sign-ups available now. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
Winter Volleyball
Winter Youth Volleyball will begin mid-January, and sign-ups are open now. This will involve built-in practices, and competitive team games Sunday afternoons. Location and start-date to be determined. This program is designed for grades 3rd-12th and is open to boys and girls. Cost is $45 per child with a maximum of $115 per family. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
Instructional Basketball Clinic
This clinic’s main objective is to provide basic level fundamental instruction for kids age Pre-K through 8th grade. Fundamentals include dribbling with both hands, proper shooting form, proper passing techniques, terminology, and much more!
Elementary Boys & Girls Basketball
This program is co-sponsored with the Wood County Board of Education and takes place early winter, ending with a tournament between teams.
Tennis
This program begins June 6, 2023, and is available to all youth age groups. This program provides an opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of tennis. We look forward to seeing you at our Summer Tennis.
Elementary Track
This program provides an opportunity to compete with your classmates and many others.
Harvest Moon Festival
This festival is scheduled to take place Saturday September 16th through Sunday September 17th. This festival is a fun-filled family event that showcases the talents of local artisans! This is an event you DON’T want to miss!
Fishing Derby
This event is typically scheduled in the middle of April at both City Park, and Southwood Parks in Parkersburg. This is a free event to any child between the ages of 3-14. This is fun event that provides exposure to the activity of fishing.
Honey Festival
This festival is scheduled to take place Saturday, August 26th through Sunday August 27th. This festival showcases and highlights the importance of the honey bee to WV, as well as gives local artisans a venue to showcase their talents. This is open to all ages!
Summer Adventures
This is a FREE program opened to all children kindergarten through 5th grade. This program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 13, 2023 and end Friday, July 29, 2023. Start time is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snack and lunch will be provided. Summer Adventures will offer a variety of structured activities that will expose our youth to passionate and positive mentors to pair with fun activities.
